Dominican Republic: Santo Domingo gets higher

After four years of works and more than 70 million US dollars of investments, the cable car of Santo Domingo has just been inaugurated by the President of the Dominican Republic, Danilo Medina. It will benefit the nearly 287,000 residents of the Santo Domingo East and Santo Domingo North neighbourhoods, which are the least well served by public transport.

The cable car’s commissioning responds to the city’s road problems and connects more than 30 neighborhoods in three municipalities in the vicinity of the capital.

The president of the Dominican Republic, Danilo Medina, stressed that the cable car will bring financial relief to thousands of Dominican families who, in the future, will only have to pay a visit to the schools or to their work.

The cable car, which can carry up to 3 000 passengers per hour, will benefit the nearly 287 000 inhabitants in the areas of Gualey, in the Distrito Nacional, Los Tres Brazos, Santo Domingo East and Sabana Perdida, in Santo Domingo North.

About 83 % of this population depends on public transport. Until now, it took almost 90 minutes to get to downtown.

The cabins, made in France, can carry up to 800 kg each.

Although the cable car was designed as an urban public transport solution, tourists visiting Santo Domingo will be able to make the entire five-kilometre journey, which twice passes over the Ozama River, offering a unique panorama.
